According to a Lancet Oncology journal study, most of the cases of childhood cancer come from low- to middle-income countries and among these children, the survival rates are poor. Census 2011 had also revealed that the prevalence of childhood cancer was the highest in India, likely due to the fact that 30% of the Indian population was younger than 14 years of age. The study by Lancet had stated that of the childhood cancer patients in India, less than 20,000 get access to treatment.
When identified early, cancer is more likely to respond to effective treatment and result in a greater probability of survival, less suffering, and often less expensive and less intensive treatment. Significant improvements can be made in the lives of children with cancer by detecting cancer early and avoiding delays in care. A correct diagnosis is essential to treat children with cancer because each cancer requires a specific treatment regimen that may include surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy.
Early diagnosis consists of 3 components:
Provide craft materials, puzzles, books & games to children receiving treatment.
Prepare meals for families with children undergoing treatment.
Donate gas, parking & food gift cards to families in need or a childhood cancercenter.
Provide cancer support books and magazines to your local school.
Write cards full of well-wishes and share them with a local cancer center.
Make or buy new hats, caps, head scarves and blankets to donate to children’scancer centers.
Coordinate travel arrangements to and from treatments for a family of a child with cancer.
Provide tutoring services to children with cancer and their siblings.
Organize a childhood cancer camp or sponsor a child to attend one.
Volunteer to assist a family in sharing their story through photography.
Sponsor an activity day for children with cancer.
Raise awareness through radio public service announcements or social mediacampaigns.
Provide children’s entertainment at a hospital or treatment center for children with cancer.
Remodel a children’s cancer center.
Form a support group for those affected by childhood cancer.
Volunteer at a housing facility serving children with cancer.
Assist at camps for children with special needs.
Host a wellness and nutrition day advocating healthy living habits for young people.
